Once it is
established to high confidence that x-ray irradiation
causes an increase in the counts collected in lines of
the GSB, the possibility of system error must be
eliminated.
Irradiation caused
no enhancement of lines from the impurity, 172Lu
nor from a 133Ba fiducial included in the
geometry. Conversely, nothing appeared to be enhanced
when the isomer target was nearby and an empty target
holder was placed in the x-ray beam to give the same
amount of scattered x-rays.
Inserting 178Hf
isomers into the x-ray beam was necessary and sufficient
to enhance g emission in the GSB.
